Eurobowl XXXI: New Yorker Lions win for the third time in a row
The New Yorker Lions have done it again. In the Eurobowl XXXI, the team from Braunschweig won 55-14 at the Volksbank-Stadion in Frankfurt against the Samsung Frankfurt Universe. The North Germans celebrated the third consecutive success in Europe's most important football final in front of a great crowd of 7.693 fans.
It was a very promising start for the hosts from Frankfurt. In the first drive there could have been points, but running back Silas Nacita was beaten the egg out of his hands only some yards to the end zone after a spectacular run with two spin moves - fumble and ball possession for Braunschweig.
Afterwards, the New Yorker Lions impressively demonstrated why they dominated German and European football in recent years.
With numerous big plays, the title holder led clear in the first quarter with 21-0. The first touchdown by David McCants was prepared by himself with a 64-yard run. For the second score, quarterback Casey Therriault found Niklas Römer with a 30-yard pass, which the wide receiver carried 40 yards into the end zone. Nine seconds before the end of the first quarter, Lars Steffen intercepted a pass from Frankfurt's quarterback Sonny Weishaupt. In the following drive, Lions playmaker Therriault surprised the defense of the Samsung Universe with a flea flicker trick play and fired the ball over 45 yards to Nathaniel Morris into the end zone of the hosts.
In the second quarter, the lions continued where they had stopped before the change of sides. Two more touchdowns from Morris meant a clear 35-0.
Then Frankfurt could finally rejoice. Jeremy Dixon, who was more and more converted to a quarterback, found George Robinson for an 18 yard touchdown in the Lions' end zone.
However, the Lions were not impressed and scored two more times before the break. Nathaniel Morris, who was still wearing the jersey of the Universe last season, cheered after his overall fourth touchdown. Christian Petersen then run the ball into the end zone of the hosts after an interception. Tobias Goebel's only failed PAT on this evening means a score of 48-7 at half time.
In the second half, the New Yorker Lions increased the lead to 55-7 by a second touchdown of Römer after a pass from Therriault, before Samsung Frankfurt Universe made a semi-conciliatory conclusion with the score from David Giron after Weishaupt's pass.
Therefor the crown of European football will be another year in Braunschweig.
Markus Grahn, Headcoach Samsung Frankfurt Universe: "Today you have seen the effort it takes to build a successful football program. Congratulations to coach Tomlin and his team. This was a teaching lesson. Nevertheless, I am proud of my team. We have never resigned and will hopefully pull our lessons from this game."
Troy Tomlin, Headcoach New Yorker Lions: "Our guys were well prepared and hot. We had a very good day and I am proud that we left the field again as champion."
AFVD President Robert Huber: "The season 2017 of the BIG6 was the most successful in the history of the league. The BIG6 with the EUROBOWL as final has proved that it is the true successor of the NFL Europe and the former World League of American Football. With Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Barcelona, the season 2017 featured teams from four of the NFL 's traditionally established European clubs. The EUROBOWL is, in its 31st edition, the traditional end of Europe in par excellence. The BIG6 is economically solid for the participating teams and offers participants a competition at the highest level of sport in Europe."
